It's been almost four months since I moved back to the North Country after 21 years away. And still, when I run into people around the region, their message to me is simple: Welcome home. It's a powerful notion, home, and you only need to listen to NCPR for a moment to grasp that feeling. Like all homes, ours needs a strong foundation.
And that's where you come in. Our Fall Fundraiser is into its home stretch. It ends Friday afternoon , and we need your help to bring us home.
Thank you for supporting us! It's surrounded by wilderness, tucked into the western reaches of the Adirondack Park on Stillwater Reservoir and there's no road in or out. It's a long drive down a dirt road to the Stillwater Reservoir boat ramp. I took a dirt road to the Stillwater Reservoir boat ramp, hopped on a ferry for 45 minutes and then took a 10 minute van ride to speak with Scott Thompson. Thompson is an out-going man in his 60s with a bushy mustache.
The rustic wooden lodge and family of cabins sit by a pond. Through a break in the trees the Stillwater Reservoir looks like a flat wide river. Canoes and kayaks rest on the shore behind us. Our family that started out as seven of us and then my grandmother and grandfather, is now down to four of us still living here. The Thompsons heat with wood.
A lot of it. It doesn't chop itself. In fact Thompson was working the whole time I was there. He and his siblings needed to serve lunch to two dozen people. Most were here for the day trip but some would spend a few nights, taking a little time to embrace an isolated natural setting, and put the digital world aside for a while. And then somebody gets them to go fishing or somebody gets them to go into the kayak or the canoe. An occasional motor boat, the whirring cicadas, and the sound of a rock kerplunking provide the soundtrack to a Norridgewock outing.
And for Thompson, this remote location offers a bonus. You can see the stars. The hotel is busy in the summer, and even busier in the winter, when guests bring themselves on snowmobiles and cross country skies.
But transportation is limited during mud season and early winter before the snow. Knowing that Thompson is one of only four residents in this tiny out of the way hamlet begged another question. Work-life balance is hard. Please consider making a gift to NCPR. Donate Now. Our fundraiser is happening now.
