Tips for Restoring of Barbie and Other Plastic Dolls

Share best practices, tips, and insights. Meet other eBay community members who share your passions. My husband and I just recently got into selling stuff on eBay and we recently acquired a big box of Vintage ss Barbie stuff that we plan on selling on eBay. The dolls are definitely in worse-for-wear condition, as are the clothes I've identified the genuine Barbie outfits out of the box, I used to be a bit of a collector ages ago so know what I'm looking at.

A couple of the dolls are particularly grubby- the Dramatic New Living Barbie has a layer of grey gunk all over her arms and legs, as does the Dramatic New Living Skipper.

They've also got this 'grey gunk' on their faces. I obviously don't want to wash the face paint off or ruin them prior to selling- so does anyone have any tried and true suggestions? The other dolls aren't so bad. Additionally, some of the clothes look like they could use a wash- and some have small stains- what is the best way to clean and stain treat Mod-Era Barbie clothes? Well Amber Mod era are notorious for staining and difficulty cleaning.

Collectors are very aware of these problems and if you try and clean and ruin them, thats it. NO going back. You can gently wash the dolls with water and dishwashing liquid. I'd leave the clothes as-is. Most collectors have their own preferred methods of cleaning. The Living and Live Action dolls can be tough to clean and may need a lot of elbow grease.

Sometimes just soap and a toothbrush won't do it. I often have to use Bon Ami and a toothbrush to get the limbs clean. It's OK to wash those dolls' faces with it too, I've never had it cause any paint loss, but generally I do like to just use a milk liquid soap for faces.

Their limbs must be made out of a weird different type of vinyl. I've gotten some that have turned orange, but it does wash off with scrubbing. In Blitman's video, he uses Acetone to clean Barbie rubbery arms and legs It appears to work but what it's really doing is removing the top layer of the vinyl itself, not just removing the dirt. Thank you all for your help! I'll clean up the dolls the best I can, but leave the fashions as-is for now. I definitely don't want to ruin them!

I clean Barbie clothes all the time. For colors I use Woolite. For whites I use regular laundry soap and bleach. I clean clothes all the time too. But I've been doing it for years and know exactly how each fabric will react to my preferred methods. I never recommend that someone who doesn't know these things all of sudden try to clean clothes before selling them.

Case in point, someone just posted on the Dolls board that she removed a dress from a MIB Madame Alexander and washed it because it was dusty. When she did, a pink ribbon bled on the light colored dress.

And in doing so, she devalued the doll. If you don't know what you're doing and are planning to sell the clothes, it's best to leave well enough alone. I agree with not washing clothes, let the buyer do it. You can clean the dolls, but I don't mind getting them dirty either, so that's up to you and how much work you want to put into it. Thank you all! Just to let you know, I was able to clean a couple of the dolls tonight and they look SO much better without all of that black gunk- thank you for the great tips!

I'll leave the fashions as-is and let the buyer wash them to their liking. I do NOT want to ruin them, afterall!

All of your advice has been so appreciated! That is first time have ever heard to use Acetone to clean a doll. I sure would not do it. Someone not from here told me to use Acetone on the modern smiley Barbies to remove the lip paint from the mouth corners to get rid of the joker smile. Did not seem to work so well for me. I could tell the acetone was 'eating' into the vinyl before even removing the paint.

Not good! I know that almost all OOAK artists use acetone to remove the face paint before they repaint dolls, so it must work okay without damaging the vinyl. But it certainly would never be my first choice for just cleaning a doll. Must be the technique or something.

I think you need to work fast with it for one thing. Maybe I need to blot more and wipe less; I don't know. Skip to main content. Go to My eBay page. The eBay Community.
