With the announcement that the Browns will be receiving new uniforms for the season, take a look back at the team's appearance from its inception in all the way through The Browns entered the brand-new All-America Football Conference with white uniforms, featuring white helmets, brown and orange stripes on the sleeves and socks, and brown block numbers with an orange drop shadow.
The Browns wouldn't wear a drop shadow on their uniforms again until Paul Brown center right observes with a group of his players on the sideline during a game. The Browns exclusively wore a white helmet during their run of dominance in the AAFC from before incorporating an orange helmet.
They switched to the orange helmet permanently in The Browns first wore this orange helmet with a single white stripe down the middle starting in Also during that season, the NFL standardized its number system, requiring players such as quarterback Otto Graham to drastically change their jersey numbers.
Graham switched from wearing No. This unique photo shows Otto Graham with his new number, changed to fit newly implemented NFL numbering standards, but wearing the white helmet the Browns left behind in Lou Groza 76 watches in the distance as Darrel "Pete" Brewster falls near the goal line during a game. The new, orange-numbered top was so unpopular, the team switched to white numbers with an orange outline in time for the regular season. Also different in the uniforms: white facemasks, a different stripe set on the sleeves and wider, reversed stripes on the pants.
The new road uniform included orange socks, an orange outline on the brown numbers and a new triple-striped sleeve following an orange-brown-orange pattern that, oddly enough, was the reverse of the new pants stripe.
The change lasted just one season before the Browns returned to their more traditional look, bringing the white facemask along with them. Orange receded into a secondary role for the next 15 years, as the team relied more on a white-dominant look that harkened back to the club's earliest days. Browns receivers Reggie Langhorne 88 and Webster Slaughter 84 celebrate during a game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
While many teams opted to wear throwbacks for the NFL's year anniversary in , the Browns stuck to their current sets with the 75th anniversary patch added to the left chest. When the Browns returned to the NFL as an expansion franchise in , they commemorated their rebirth with a special patch and moved the uniform's television numbers from the sleeve to the shoulder.
Orange returned with authority as the team's alternate jersey in as the NFL encouraged teams to adopt a third top. The brown drop shadow on the white numbers served as an informal nod to the team's first uniform in its history. The jersey was also a callback to the orange tops with which the Browns experimented during preseason games in the mids.
The team's embracing of orange grew during the following season, when the franchise welcomed back the orange pants made popular from The Browns wore these pants during a Sunday night game against the Steelers in , which they won in front of a national television audience.
The orange pants weren't as successful when paired with the brown home jerseys in The Browns fell to the St. Louis Rams in a Monday night contest in Cleveland. The Browns mixed in another slight change in , adding a thin white stripe between the brown and orange stripes on the pants worn with the brown jerseys at home. These alternate white pants made occasional appearances in the mids. They also had a set without the thin white stripe that were worn on the road and sometimes at home, too.
The orange jerseys lasted just three seasons and the orange pants merely two campaigns before the Browns went back to the white pants exclusive look in That set up bigger changes in as the team celebrated its 60th anniversary of its inception. In a very emphatic nod to the Browns' roots, the team went back to gray facemasks, orange-brown-orange striping on the pants, a slightly darker brown jersey and the original sleeve striping worn by the team from These uniforms would eventually expand to include solid brown pants worn intermittently near the start of the s.
The Browns broke out the all-brown look for the first time in franchise history for a Thursday night game against the Buffalo Bills in Radical change arrived in in the form of significantly different uniforms manufactured and designed by Nike. The sets included three jerseys brown, orange, white , three sets of pants brown, orange, white and two pairs of socks brown, orange , as well as a more vibrant orange, a matte finish to the helmet, a graphic print inside the brown helmet stripes, a brown facemask, the city name of Cleveland across the chest and the team nickname of Browns down the side of the pants.
The new duds were revealed at an orange-carpet event at the Cleveland Convention Center in April of The Browns won the game wearing the new alternate uniforms, which were influenced by the team's look of old, but replaced white elements with an all brown and orange approach.

Former Browns owner Art Modell scheduled home games against the Steelers on Saturday nights from to to help fuel the rivalry. The teams have played twice annually since , making it the oldest rivalry in the AFC and the fifth-oldest rivalry in the NFL.
Though the Browns dominated this rivalry early in the series winning the first eight meetings and posting a 31—9 record in the s and s , the Steelers went 15—5 in the s and 34—6—1 since the Browns returned to the league in The Steelers have been particularly dominant in Pittsburgh, posting a 42—6 record when hosting the Browns since , including winning streaks of 16 —85 and 15 games present.
The Steelers currently hold a 75—58—1 lead. The Browns and Steelers met in the playoffs in and , with the Steelers winning both meetings. Though the rivalry has cooled in Pittsburgh due to the Modell move as well as the Browns' poor play since , the Steelers still remain the top rival for Cleveland.
Originally conceived due to the personal animosity between Paul Brown and Art Modell , the "Battle of Ohio" between the Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals has been fueled by the sociocultural differences between Cincinnati and Cleveland, a shared history between the two teams, and similar team colors, as Brown used the exact shade of orange for the Bengals that he used for the Browns.
Though this has changed since then, as the Bengals now use a brighter shade of orange. The rivalry has also produced two of the eight highest-scoring games in NFL history.
Cincinnati has the all-time edge 50— While the Bengals have a 26—14 edge since the Browns returned to the NFL in , the Browns-Bengals series has been more competitive than the Browns' series with their other division rivals. Created as a result of the Browns' relocation to Baltimore , the rivalry between the Browns and Baltimore Ravens was more directed at Art Modell than the team itself, and is simply considered a divisional game in Baltimore.
This matchup is more bitter for Cleveland than the others due to the fact that the draft picks for to resulted in the rosters that won the Super Bowl for the Ravens in Had the Browns stayed in Cleveland, these teams drafted by general manager Ozzie Newsome might have given the Browns the title after a year drought. The two teams have not met in the playoffs. The Lions won three of those championships, while the Browns won one.
This was arguably one of the NFL's best rivalries in the s. From to , the two teams played an annual preseason game known as the "Great Lakes Classic".
The Bills rivalry had its roots back to the days of the AAFC, when there was a team from Buffalo with the same name in that league. After the current incarnation of the Bills joined the NFL, the Browns and Bills have played each other from time to time. Though the Browns and Bills are in different AFC divisions, a mellow rivalry defined by mutual respect has since developed between the teams due to the similarities between Buffalo and Cleveland and shared misfortune between the teams.
Despite this "rivalry" being known for ugly games, such as an Browns win played in a blizzard in and a Browns win in in which Browns quarterback Derek Anderson only completed 2 of 17 passes, there have been some competitive moments between the Bills and Browns as well, such as a playoff game in and two games with playoff-implications in and The Browns fans' respect for the Bills is partly due to Bills founding owner Ralph Wilson being one of only two NFL owners to vote against the decision to move the original Browns team to Baltimore.
Denver took a 21—3 lead, but Browns' quarterback Bernie Kosar threw four touchdown passes to tie the game at 31—31 halfway through the 4th quarter. After a long drive, John Elway threw a yard touchdown pass to running back Sammy Winder to give Denver a 38—31 lead. Cleveland advanced to Denver's 8-yard line with left, but Broncos' safety Jeremiah Castille stripped Browns' running back Earnest Byner of the football at the 2-yard line—a play that has been called The Fumble by Browns' fans.
The Broncos recovered it, gave Cleveland an intentional safety, and went on to win 38— The study, while not scientific , was largely based on fan loyalty during winning and losing seasons, attendance at games, and challenges confronting fans such as inclement weather or long-term poor performance of their team.
Perhaps the most visible Browns fans are those that can be found in the Dawg Pound. Originally the name for the bleacher section located in the open east end of old Cleveland Municipal Stadium , the current incarnation is likewise located in the east end of FirstEnergy Stadium and still features hundreds of orange and brown clad fans sporting various canine-related paraphernalia.
The fans adopted that name in after members of the Browns defense used it to describe the team's defense. Retired cornerback Hanford Dixon , who played his entire career for the Browns — , is credited with naming the Cleveland Browns defense 'The Dawgs' in the mids. Dixon and teammates Frank Minnifield and Eddie Johnson would bark at each other and to the fans in the bleachers at the Cleveland Stadium to fire them up. It was from Dixon's naming that the Dawg Pound subsequently took its title.

History of the Cleveland Browns - Wikipedia
Back in March, the ownership family of the Cleveland Browns announced that the team would be wearing new uniforms for the season. That means that this year will be the last season where we get to see uniforms from their ill-fated uniform revamp ahead of the season.
This has basically turned the upcoming season into a bit of a lame-duck season for their current uniform set and their recent uniform change reflects what appears to be their attitudes towards their current uniform set. The team recently announced that they are going to wear their Color Rush uniforms as their primary home look for the season. The Browns won every game that they played in these uniforms last season and the uniform is also most similar to the classic uniforms that they inexplicably abandoned after the season.
What makes this interesting about this uniform becoming instantly popular is that the Browns actually had to wait a while to wear these uniforms. The Browns had to wait two seasons before finally wearing their Color Rush uniforms for the first When the Color Rush program started in , the Browns were unable to wear it for both the and season due to the brown jerseys and pants clashing with their opponents for their dedicated Color Rush games in those seasons.
However, when the NFL slightly loosened their rules on uniforms for the season, that allowed the Browns to wear them more than once and they were able to finally wear them on the field.
All it took was three games and three wins for the uniforms to steal the hearts of fans and observers and now the team will be wearing them as their home uniform for this season. It just might be for only this season as well. As mentioned early, the Browns are set for a uniform change for the season.
If anything, this could just be a soft way to phase out their unpopular primary uniform set. The fans still have to deal with the current uniform set for their road games and maybe even a couple of home games as well. Still, both the uniform set and the Color Rush uniform could be just a memory by this time next season. The Browns have already started to phase this uniform out of existence.
Either way, this is a temporary solution to a short term problem. With a new set of uniforms on the way, a new if temporary primary home uniform for the upcoming season and some actual hope for their chances on the field, things are looking up in all categories for the Browns.
