Here's just a few of the shows and special events The Advocate editors will be tracking in the first half of The witty, socially-conscious series shines a light on issues around race, gender, and LGBTQ people and it's sophomore year only promises to dig deeper with the show's signature humor and heart. At its core, the show was about found family and unconditional love. This fast-paced, edgier heir to The Fosters , with its jumbled chronology and flashback storytelling, amps up the notion of extended family. Where Stef and Lena brought family into their home, on Good Trouble , their daughters seek out a new family as they navigate the various personalities of the denizens of the Coterie, a funky downtown Los Angeles communal living space where they land.
Lesbo tv is the OG Choni. Kiernan Shipka will return to her role as the spunky and occasional-worshipper of Lesbo tv, Sabrina Spellman, in season 2 of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Teen ligerie are consensual sex scenes that focus on women enjoying themselves but somehow manage not to feel male gaze-y. Orphan Black is available in Germany, too, but we hardly have any of the stuff mentioned above No, not even Buffy. The Fall season was pretty incredible for representation — it seemed like I had to update the TV Preview every few days with a new lesbian or bisexual character popping up. Shows that took less than a one-month break between their last episode and their next episode are mentioned in bold italics, but are not given full pics and descriptions.
This is cute and fun but also has an awareness of social issues! Most exciting of all : their new building manager and de facto house mother, Alice Kwan Sherry Cola , is a selfless and closeted-to-her-family Asian-American soft butch lesbian.
Still, it looks really cute! Plus, queer actress Emily Hampshire! Star Trek has the most bizarre relationship with the gays. Once the internet was born, Janeway and Seven of Voyager became the go-to queer subtext sci-fi couple for decades. Through the magic of science fiction and internet outrage, Culber is returning for season two.
All I know for sure is that no one really reads as particularly straight on this show. How about that. Behind the scenes, in front of the cameras. Everyone who works with us has gotten queerer and queerer in the past six years. I swear to God. Season 2 of Siren promises to give us more of the throuple action from Season 1, where mermaid Ryn seems into both Maddie and her on-again, off-again boyfriend Ben.
It seems some of them will be working against Ryn and some will be working with her to just try to blend in and save their species, but hopefully we get some more lady-loving merladies this year. In a moment that will undoubtably make me feel elderly, RENT!
Rebecca Henderson who is married to co-creator Leslye Headland plays Lizzie, a lesbian who enjoys group sex and also one-on-one-sex and wearing overalls! This is a show about, I believe, zombies! Am I right so far? I feel like it might be such a different equation.
It might not just be war. That sounds exciting to play. Shadowhunters will conclude its third season which aired its first ten episodes from March — May this year with ten traditional episodes and a two-part finale. Filming those last few episodes was truly bittersweet. Station 19 will be back to see if the otherwordly attractive firefighters survive yet another peril and make it to yet another day.
Most relevant to our interest will be finding out if Maya Bishop who was recently promoted to Lieutenant by the Seattle FD! Two great reasons to watch: queer actress, Jasmin Savoy Brown, as public defender Allison Adams…she might not be gay on the show, but her relationship with her BFF, Sandra, is the gayest thing about For the People. Second, the actual queer character: Kate Littlejohn, the Paris Gellar-esque federal prosecutor, who hooked up with Anya Ooms played by pansexual actress Caitlin Stasey during season one.
You were probably going to watch this show anyhow but now you basically have to! Also John Cameron Mitchell is in it, so. All Rights Reserved. The second series will pick up right where the first left off — M15 Officer Eve stabbed Villanelle, who managed to get away.
This new season is packed with superlative performances and is as twisty, subversive, darkly funny, nerve-wracking and pleasurable as our fans could desire. Speaking of hearts, we can probably expect a very heartbroken Kat to return this spring.
She had a very popular personal blog once upon a time, and then she recapped The L Word , and then she had the idea to make this place, and now here we all are! Follow her on twitter and instagram. I went back, and I do not regret it. The trailer looks super fun! Although, small correction if I may: David is pansexual. So are all television characters named Tara not-straight? 26 Must-See TV Shows for LGBTQ Viewers in Winter/Spring
When Cheryl Blossom's romance with Toni Topaz started during Riverdale 's second season, we had no idea how popular this unlikely pairing would become. Arguably the healthiest relationship on teen TV, fans saw these supportive, confident girls fall in love while Cheryl learned to accept her sexuality through season two, but it still took until halfway through the third season for Choni to be shown having sex.
If Riverdale was one of those shows from the '90s where every sex scene had to be prefaced with a "Very Special Episode" warning, waiting a year for its most popular couple to get caught in flagrante would make more sense, but in classic CW fashion, most of Riverdale 's characters do the deed whenever and wherever they want.
Seriously, there was a whole scene where Archie and Veronica have shower sex to process Archie's dad getting shot because that's what the people want to see! Meanwhile, the one solid lesbian relationship is rarely allowed to get hot and heavy. Technically, the first televised lesbian kiss was on an episode of L. Law in , but even that W was a bit of an L. Basically, a bisexual lawyer kissed her heterosexual colleague, and then they both agreed to never talk about it again. Conservatives Concerned parents Homophobes were up in arms, and the network admitted it was all a ratings stunt during sweeps.
Two years later, Picket Fences gave us TV's second lesbian kiss, this time between two teenage girls. Again, one of the girls ended up being straight and it was a clear ratings ploy, but this time on a show that actually tried to gently talk about homophobia. One of the biggest shows of all time, a one in one-hundred million series where Netflix is concerned, had a pair of recurring characters in a steady lesbian relationship. Carol and Susan on Friends was a rare moment of visibility for lesbian couples, especially for a happy couple raising a child together.
Sadly, their wedding scene was banned in multiple U. Still, the couple wasn't even allowed to kiss at their own wedding. Bear in mind this was less than thirty years ago, and a peck between married women was the height of taboo. One of the most talked-about TV couples of all time, Willow Rosenberg's discovery of her sexuality was the first time, aside from Ellen 's major reveal, that a kiss between two women wasn't just a ratings booster.
You probably haven't heard of HeartBeat , a two-season medical drama that's been completely overshadowed by series like ER and Grey's Anatomy , but TV historians know it as the first American television show with a lesbian lead.
Marilyn and her partner, Patty, were included with little fanfare surrounding their sexuality, but that was less of an attempt to normalize LGBTQ couples and more of a symptom of the network not allowing the couple to be affectionate with each other. They weren't even allowed to touch. Channel 4. The series was a banner moment for LGBTQ visibility, with transgender characters, gay and lesbian leads, and same-sex couples that were actually allowed to have sex.
On the show, D'orothea was a closeted model, and Mona was her ex-partner. The show had a lot of couples on the sexuality spectrum, but for the first series, D'orothea and Mona were one of the biggest. Nearly every couple on Grey's Anatomy is ill-fated. Has there even been one couple that's made it to season sixteen? Callie and Arizona's love story was one of the series's biggest, and even though it ended in an ugly custody battle and spoiler!
Jessica Capshaw , who played Arizona for a full decade, is one of the longest-standing lesbian characters to ever feature on American television. Family Channel. People would have expected Degrassi: The Next Generation to include a lesbian relationship just for the shock value, but the real Canadian homies over on the ironically-named Family Channel instead made a beautifully progressing depiction of two women falling in love. HollyJSinclair really put it best on Twitter: In , Degrassi fully sent with the character development, the enemies-to-lovers trope, and the "fake" couple falling in love story.
And, in a stunning Degrassi move, no one died! Take that, "Bury Your Gays" trope. Speaking of foreign shows that beat U. The male-to-female ratio was severely lacking, with only three women in the leading cast of ten characters.
Melanie Marcus was one of the lucky few, as was her longtime partner, Lindsay. They were included alongside their gay dads, which After Ellen theorizes is the reason they were integrated so deeply into the show's core group, but it was still a major moment for lesbian visibility, especially in regards to sex.
Making up for the heavy focus on gay men in Queer as Folk , which could have just been called Gay as Folk and saved themselves a lot of confusion, The L Word was another Canadian-American co-production, but this one was fully filled with lesbians.
Yay, lesbians! Main characters Bette and Tina are two of the series' most beloved characters, and they really beloved each other. It was one of the first times lesbians weren't just used for sub-plots or sweeps scams.
The CW. A more modern example of televised lesbian visibility, Freya and Keelin in The Originals became a fan-favorite couple. The interracial and, as a vampire and a werewolf, technically interspecies lesbian TV couple would have caused a literal riot thirty years ago, but today, they were able to have a successful long-distance relationship on-screen that ends in the girls deciding to have a baby together via surrogacy. And, despite it being a show about the undead, neither of them died!
After The Vampire Diaries barely handled queerness at all during its long run, it was refreshing to see the topic broached well and casually on its sister series. Skins seemed like a show that did things just for the shock value.
Emily and Maya might not have been endgame on Pretty Little Liars , but you have to admit that Alison was horrible. Maya was Emily's first girlfriend, and although the relationship fell into a lot of TV stereotypes about girl-on-girl relationships, PLL dealt with Emily coming out of the closet pretty realistically, focused on her relationships when it made sense to, and otherwise just let her live without making her sexuality her entire character.
It would have been nice if showrunners had given Emily a partner we could actually root for at some point instead of having her get together with her middle school bully who she eventually divorces but, hey, that's life. We're starting to see a trend of LGBTQ females on television being closer to bi than lesbian with commentators still classifying the characters as lesbian in a troubling pattern of bi erasure, but in the case of characters like Arrow 's Sara Lance, this might be because the showrunners didn't originally conceive of the character as gay, set up storylines with a male romance, then changed their minds.
It's not great, but it's better than nothing. Sara was Oliver Queen's on-again, off-again lover, but it's her relationship with fellow assassin Nyssa that fans really embraced. Sure, Alex is the reason that Piper landed herself in jail, but all relationships have their rocky patches. Orange Is The New Black has more lesbian relationships than any other show that isn't, by definition, about its characters being lesbians we're looking at you, The L Word. Poussey was probably the most popular lesbian character on the show, which is actually the reason that showrunners decided to kill her off in a spectacularly disturbing fashion, but Alex and Piper are the show's central couple and work through their issues until they eventually marry during season six.
Ellen DeGeneres 's sitcom was one of the biggest defining moments for queer television. The watershed "Puppy Episode" where Ellen's character came out of the closet, almost concurrently with the actress coming out on Time Magazine IRL, won an Emmy and drove viewership to more than forty million viewers although it did, later, experience a ratings drop following the episode , but it was Ellen 's fifth season where she was able to really explore her sexuality on the show where major strides were made.
Ellen's on-screen relationship with Laurie led to an episode where Ellen loses her virginity again with her new girlfriend, which was treated with a healthy, tender lens that we rarely see in depictions of LGBTQ relationships even today. The pair had to go through a miscarriage, illness, IRS problems, and the various trouble that their children got into, but despite their realistic ups-and-downs, this depiction of two wives raising a family was fairly trope-free and was a rare instance of a family-centric show being led by a lesbian couple.
They even addressed the legalization of same-sex marriage on the show, with these wonderful women renewing their vows in order to get the same rights as heterosexual married couples. Faking It was a show about two best friends pretending to be lesbians in order to be popular at school, which is in equal part a utopian future we have yet to see and a telling indicator that, at least in the media's eyes, attitudes surrounding same-sex couples were changing.
Showrunner Carter Covington has made no secret of his original plans for the show's ending prior to its surprise cancellation, explaining that he always intended for BFFs Karma and Amy to get together at some point, with Karma realizing that her sexuality is also fluid, before ending their relationship to save their best friendship, which would really last forever. The great part about Karma and Amy's pseudo-ship is how the series provided a comprehensive view on sexuality, discovery, and how it's more important to be who you truly are than the label that's been provided for you.
Forget baby boomers, millennials, and Gen-Z. The real generational lines are defined by which long-running medical series you were hooked on in your late teens: Grey's Anatomy or ER.
As far as Sapphic love stories go, Grey's Anatomy did it better, but ER did it earlier, so there's a bit of a learning curve to take into account.
Sandy was then barely seen the following season despite still having a progressing relationship with Kerry, then died for no good reason while Kerry and Sandy were the only lesbian relationship on primtime TV Strike Three. Before it all went downhill, though, this was the first lesbian relationship that ER treated like its straight couples, allowing them to be affectionate and kiss on screen. Brittana is the OG Choni. It wasn't always easy going for the couple, and like Cheryl, Santana's family didn't always support her, but love won.
It might be a stretch to say that The Bold Type really "paved the way" for a couple that debuted only a year before Choni hit the small screen, but Adena and Kat's relationship certainly feels groundbreaking.
It took three seasons for Riverdale to even shown Choni in bed, but by The Bold Type 's second season, their interracial lesbian couple was really out here giving each other oral sex on Hulu. Adena and Kat are, essentially, the main couple of the show, and they have realistic conversations about what they need in and out of the bedroom, which gives a focus on female pleasure that even hetero television couples haven't gotten right.
