Yes, I agree that based on the trailer, you would not have expected the sexual content. However, it is R rated so I was expecting something I had read in advance about the brief masturbation part. I watched this movie at home with my 13 year old, 8th grade daughter. She wanted to watch it together which made my day And yes, it was uncomfortable at times.

By age 13, vast majority of kids have had sex ed in school, have watched PG movies and have heard sexual terms in and around school and among their peers unless they are homeschooled, of course. Any parent who thinks their 8th grader should not know about this stuff is living in a bubble. She'll be in high school in the fall and if this comes up amongst her peers, she'll know.

For what it's worth, I want my child to be informed at the end of the day and know that I'm open to talking about these things if she needs. And the car scene was brilliant My daughter liked the movie, but said "Mom, I hope you don't think that 8th grade is all like that" and "I don't know any mean girls like that", etc. I learned a lot from her comments on the film.

And I think for my daughter to see all the social media use in the film was eye opening for her. She agrees that most 8th graders are constantly on their phones, but they don't realize how that comes across as a reflection on our society.

So many great messages here. Excellent film!! This title contains: Positive Messages. Positive role models. This review Helped me decide. Had useful details. Read my mind. Report this review. Adult Written by anujackie October 28, Worse vulgar actions and language If u gonna take your kids to this movie let them see porn movies as well. One kid musterbatng in class and another kid asking for blowjobs. Poor content to the worse music this is junk.

I was soo disappointed when we decided to watch this movie as family movie. Kids were shown a guy musterbating off the bat. Do not expose your kids to this junk.

This title contains: Sexy stuff. Adult Written by op05 October 8, Cannot recommend this movie This was one of the worst, if not the worst, movie I've ever seen. I went with my friend because she said it has such great reviews and we thought it was bad from the beginning and didn't get any better. I hope that most teens are not really like this because, if so, it is a sad commentary on our youth. The rudeness, the disrespect in the schools, the patronizing, pathetic attitude of the adults was so disconcerting.

When the main character approached the boy she had a crush on, the only time he took his eyes off his phone to look at her was to ask "Do you give blowjobs?

Also, there was a scene where a boy took her home after being with a group at the mall. When she wouldn't take off her top he proceeded to put her down and verbally attack her. I'm sure it was so damaging to that poor little girl.

The f word and others were used casually and continuously in conversation. Speaking in a complete sentence without profanity was not the norm. Adult Written by jeeberpow September 25, Our children have the luxury of growing into that world more gradually, and I will not be promoting this movie for them. There are a lot of other good life-lesson resources out there. Adult Written by Anna Q.

August 24, This title contains: Language. Adult Written by happyeyeballs August 21, Not for my daughter The sexual content in this movie was too much. I had to walk out with my daughter. The previews were misleading. Very disappointing. Adult Written by G'pa August 14, Gratitutus shock value content I thought the masterbation in Health Class was without context or meaning. There was noting to make me feel sitting out the rest of the film was worth doing so I walked out.

Got my money back. I'll wait till its at Library if at all. There should be some hint of a rescue for this acceptance obsessed young girl. All I got was more sick behavior from character Kala. I lost interest and did not find her sympathetic as played. Her Father was just as bad. An honest coming of age movie I just saw this movie with my 14 year old daughter, and we both loved it. I found this movie relatable, honest, and touching. It is neither about being popular, nor about bullying - instead its just about being, which in eighth grade can be pretty hard.

Yes, there is swearing, and there are some suggestive scenes. But this is what kids are dealing with. As a parent, I would rather watch this movie with my daughter, and have a reason to open up a conversation about it. Coming of age Burnham does a great job showing the mix of resilience and vulnerability that marks this stage of life, especially given the constant pressure for girls to post nude photos or submit to degrading hookups.

She educates herself by watching a series of "how to" youtube videos where the teacher uses sex toys and is very specific. The sequence is completely true to life but it's graphic and extended, and I don't think my eighth grader has encountered anything that explicit before. I am glad to see these issues brought up, but I'm not sure the youtube sequence wasn't a bit early for my fairly sheltered young teen. Less graphic but equally powerful scenes allude to boys demanding nude photos-- and most important and I think helpful there's a really distressing scene where a predatory boy puts a lot of pressure on Kayla.

I was glad for the chance to talk about that kind of situation with my teen and I think boys as well as girls should see this movie. Also want to say that I would be interested in this film even without teenagers in the house, it's about human nature-- and it's so rare to see the perspective of a young girl presented so honestly. Kayla's character was utterly convincing and I hope more filmmakers will make movies from this point of view.

There's a sequence early on where Kayla is utterly lost in her lonely online world with Enya singing "Sail Away" in the background that is so powerful-- visually gorgeous and completely heartbreaking. My husband did not care for it, but he was vague about why. We all thought the father's character was a bit flat-- ditto the mean popular girl-- but overall the interactions were very believable and engrossing.

My daughter and I still talking about different points the next day-- especially Kayla's realistic acne genuine or movie magic, don't know she loved that Kayla looked like a real kid with a real breakout, and so did I! Adult Written by kidosophically August 8, It's Rated R for a Reason It's a great film for adults and older teens.

Chris O'Falt. Nor is A24 pulling a Harvey Weinstein and stirring up controversy and free publicity about eighth graders being barred from seeing a film that delivers a positive message about the universal struggle of middle school.

More than one such expletive requires an R rating, as must even one of those words used in sexual context. The Rating Board nevertheless may rate such a motion picture PG if, based on a special vote by a two-thirds majority, the Raters feel that most American parents would believe that a PG rating is appropriate because of the context or manner in which the words are used or because the use of the words in the motion picture is inconspicuous.

This might give the impression that the film is the middle-school version of a Judd Apatow film where friends engage in raunchy and open discussions of sex, but nothing could be further from the truth. It uses the medium to do what movies can do so well: Make the viewer emotionally relate to what a character is thinking and feeling.

We feel the pressure Kayla feels to be accepted. We feel how that is used by boys to pressure sex and just how not right that is for her. The conflict going on inside of Kayla is one that adults are desperate to help kids untangle. The nonprofit parental watchdog group Common Sense Media, which applauded the film with a 4-star rating, wrote this :. And ultimately, it also promotes open communication between teens and their parents, as well as courage, since Kayla learns to love and speak up for herself.

But those kids who will have to see this alone — the year-old girl for whom this film holds a mirror up to her existence and reflects back an image of empathy, respect, and courage — will have to break the rules to do so. Standards are meant to help people make good choices, not comfortable ones.
