By wishface , February 16, in Bass Guitars. Is this a worthwhile guitar as a fretless? They are sold with roundwound strings on an ebonol fingerboard. Is that wise? Will the roundwounds eat up the neck regardless?

Don't use it much, though. My vote goes for the vm fretless. Insert image from URL. Jul 10, Everything about the instrument felt better than the MIM Fender. Oct 26, I've tried a couple now and in the final analysis, the neck is too wide for me.

Cool heavily modded fretless PJ bass with unique art on the headstock and green chickenhead knobs. The headstock art is done by hand in india ink with some sealant over top. The neck appears to have been a fretted neck in a former life. But someone pulled the frets out, added filler to the spaces, and then sanded it flat.

The fretboard is nice and smooth. I was told this is a"90s Pro Tone" bass which leads me to believe it's a Squier. However the headstock looks more like a Washburn to me. The body is very similar to some I am fairly certain the body of this bass at least came out of the Samick factory. But perhaps the neck is aftermarket. The tuners.

Bridge, electronics, pickups, etc. This bass has a grounding issue. I checked the electronics and the ground is hooked up. But when you touch the bridge plate it actually makes the ground buzz louder. I'm working on too many projects to warrant spending time and money on fixing this, so I'd rather send this bass off to a good home.

Consider it a project bass. Unfortunately I don't have a working multimeter right now it died so I can't measure the resistance on the pickups. It plays and sounds great and it looks good as well. Ships in a nice molded Fender hard shell case. Good luck! USA Only please! Great instrument here in perfect working order! The Seymour Duncan passive pickups go from upright thump to Jaco staccato. Smooth ebanol board plays great and cuts down on string wear.

Thank you for looking and good luck bidding! I bought the neck from someone that put a Fender decal on it. They did an excellent job. But note that this is not a real Fender neck. The fretboard material is Ebonol. The truss rod is functional. There are some things you should know about the neck: I used some sandpaper on the neck near the heel see picture but an almost immeasurable amount of material was removed. I was testing some sandpaper on the fretboard material to get a feel for it.

The plan was to sand down the fret markers a little but I ended up finding another neck I liked better for the project I was working on.

The neck may have a minor ski-jump near the heel which causes some fret buzz when playing further up on the neck. This can be fixed if you have a few tools.

You can try to heat treat it. The neck has had the truss rod shimmed so that it can be tightened however I believe this was done because of the ski-jump.

The Ski-jump makes it look like the neck has more relief than it really does. I loosened the truss rod to avoid having the neck develop an S curve. This neck is sold AS-IS. I have warned you about potential problems. And the starting price is set accordingly. I set the beginning price to the minimum I'm willing to drive to the post office for; Payment is required within 3 business days.

Sorry about that. I've just been burned too many times. Squier body. Bridge and neck plate with fretless Mighty Mite neck. Fender tuning keys, string tree, knobs and road case. EMG JA solderless pickups installed, plus all original hardware included in that kit. Pickguard is walnut, control plate is maple. This is a non-factory fretless bass. The conversion was done very well. But is not a"Pro" job, fret slots have been filled in nicely and the neck and fingerboard has a smooth feel.

Mounted with D'Addario flatwounds. Jul 24, Leicestershire, UK. I've had a Squire VMF for around a year. Frankly, a little disappointed by it. Strung it with D'Addario half rounds which saves on fretboard wear with round wounds.

Judging by other posts, maybe it's just me! I'm thinking of changing the slightly puny standard briodge with a Badass 2 works great on my fretted Jazz and slotting in an Audere preamp to liven things up a little!

Aug 26, Mar 6, Laura Camacho and Jason fryer like this. Apr 1, Stafford Springs, CT. Oct 25, Jul 27, Just got a SVM fretless.

I love it. Granted I haven't had it that long, but I like the tone, the feel and the "Jaconess" of it. Still experimenting with that tone, but I have four other basses including a customized MIM fretted Jazz bass and a Spector six string with active electronics.

The SVM may become my main axe. Not to mention I got it for cost plus tax. I'd seriously look into getting a deal on one IF you can find it. They seem to be hard to come by for some reason. Maybe you'll do better than I did online. Oct 26, If you look around, for the price you're considering paying, you may be able to pick up a 90s era MIJ Standard Jazz Bass fretless which will be substantially better than both of these.

I've seen and played the Squier at Guitar Center and it really is nice, and comparable, but I personally like the classic Fender pickups, etc.

I'm more of a traditionalist. Feb 18, Hey there guys, Bringing this thread up I got the Squier VM Fretless six months ago and thinking it's time for an upgrade. Which pickups do you think would fit better for this bass, Lindy F or Nordstrand? I aslo wanna change the bridge Any recommendations or experience will be very helpfull.

Thanks a lot! Jun 15, I have had one for over a year now. I absolutely love it. I am however looking to replace because the neck is warped pretty drasticially and its a big problem when playing fast.

It is probalbly just mine in particular, it was a floor model, but make sure to check. Neck warping and fretless really sucks. Jul 10, Mar 17, Albuquerque, NM. I have the same problem with my vm fretless. I'm gonna use. I took it to a respectable builder and he adjusted the truss rod all the way to the point that it would break if adjusted any more.

His suggestion was the lighter strings now. May 12, The feel was amazing, and the sound was easily as good as the MIM Fender. However, I had several issues with the electrics on it, poor soldering and the like. I wound up taking it back, but got another Squier. This one is phenomenal!

Everything is the way it should be.

A body of agathis. The neck is constructed of maple with ebonol for the fingerboard. For those of us that like to use roundwounds on our fretless basses, ebonol is more resistant to forming grooves than an ebony fingerboard. For those of you that have never played a fretless, but are interested, the fretboard also has fret lines to help you get acquainted. Both pickups are Duncan Designed JB Single Coil pickups and there is one volume control for each pickup and one master tone control for both pickups.

The tone from the bass was warm and rich, yet had that certain growl to it. Once plugged in, I had that classic Jaco and Tony Franklin growl that so many bass players admire. I did like the fact that having separate volume controls as opposed to a volume blend seems to give more control over the variety of tones you can get from the bass. The master tone comes in quite handy, but a separate tone control for each pickup would make the tones achievable almost endless. If you are in the market for a fretless, the Squier Vintage Modified Fretless Jazz Bass is well worth a look, from everyone just starting out, to those of us who have been playing them for quite some time.

Check out more great basses at www. I picked one of these fine basses up used from a college student and put a Leo Quan Bad Ass II bridge on it as I love the sustain of those bridges and man does this bass have amazing tone and sustain.

Highly recommended for the bass player looking to make the leap into the fretless world. Your email address will not be published.

Pros: quality workmanship and playability, great for those that are budget conscious. One comment. Joe Hall June 3, at am. Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not be published.
